Just like the House of Aviz, this name change occurred from a placename.

Alfonso (1377-1443)

He was born as the illegitimate child of Portuguese King John I.

Alfonso I, Duke Of Braganza (1443-1461)

Bragança: (Portuguese) after the city from where many Portuguese kings originate

When Infante Peter, Duke of Coimbra, retained regency of King Alfonso V who was an infant, he bequeathed his uncle Alfonso I the land of Braganza. This action established the House of Braganza. This was done as a form of reconciliation.
