He is the descendant of a squire and a district. Originally from Västergötland, he would eventually be registered as a member of the Swedish nobility after raising from his status as a Chamber Assistant and Colonel.

While his brother was ennobled with the surname Applebom, Harald would be given the name Igelstrom. The Igelstrom family would eventually own estates throughout the Baltic region.
It is unknown where the surname derived from. Perhaps there was a stream known for its leeches that the family got its name from.
